“Client service is the key to my successful client relationships. I do whatever it takes to provide the highest quality service, never giving less to my clients than I would expect for myself.”

Jim joined Maner Costerisan in 2002. In addition to his role as principal in the business accounting services (BAS) and tax departments, he is responsible for the tax department’s continuing professional education (C.P.E.), and coaching and mentoring programs. He has also had the primary stewardship for the tax department’s implementation of an electronic document storage solution – allowing for less paper waste. Jim is a member of Maner Costerisan’s Marketing Committee and Affordable Housing Committee.

In his day-to-day client duties, Jim works as an outsourced controller for approximately 16 County Health Plans and a local community bank. He provides technical and accounting support to Peachtree and QuickBooks software users. In addition, he provides tax planning and consulting services to small businesses and affordable housing and nonprofit organizations.

Prior to his public accounting career, Jim spent 12 years in retail and retail management. Most recently, he was responsible for a $3.5 million retail store with 26 employees. His previous experiences and current roles have given Jim the expertise to greatly contribute to his clients’ success. Over the years, he has helped several small businesses succeed by providing and interpreting accounting and financial data, as well as advising on their next steps. Beyond his client relationships, Jim has shared his knowledge with those in the local business community, authoring an article on “Outsourcing the Financial and Accounting Functions of a Small Business” for the Greater Lansing Business Monthly magazine.

Jim discovered his interest in accounting during his retail career. He identified that customer service was the basis for both professions and felt accounting would be a great way to help people improve their businesses. Jim attributes his success to his hard work and positive attitude. He also credits his parents, who instilled in him a strong work ethic and stressed the importance of family. In addition, having children taught Jim to be selfless and patient; traits that have carried over to his client relationships.

Jim was raised in Ionia, Michigan and currently resides in DeWitt with his wife, Debbi, and their two sons. While away from the office, he enjoys spending time with his children by taking them swimming, watching movies and riding quads. Jim also has a strong interest in home theater and is in the process of completing his own home system.
