“I strive to make each of my clients feel as if they are my most important client. I try to make it clear that I am always available for them, and I work hard to set realistic expectations while providing quality, timely service.”
Jim joined Maner Costerisan in 1987. In addition to his roles as a firm shareholder and chair of the Closely-held Business Committee, he serves as a director in Maner Costerisan’s audit department. There he works with a broad range of closely-held businesses including franchisors, brokers/dealers, construction contractors and various other service organizations. Jim is also heavily involved with the nonprofit industry and assists trade associations, unions and religious, voluntary health and welfare organizations.
Jim began his professional career after graduating from college in 1984 when he worked for accounting firm KPMG Peat Marwick, which is now known as KPMG. As a senior auditor, he was responsible for supervising audits of a wide range of clients including financial institutions and manufacturers. Throughout his career, Jim has maintained a steady focus on helping his clients succeed, often in the toughest and most crucial situations. In one example, he assisted a company in developing qualifications for a chief financial officer. In multiple other instances, Jim has provided honest, direct advice and assistance to clients in urgent situations.
Jim is widely known as an expert by his clients, colleagues, and peers and offers extraordinary qualities and skills not commonly found. Specifically, he has a knack for explaining complex financial information in a manner that is easily understood by management. Additionally, Jim has the ability to tackle the most difficult issues by finding creative, timely solutions. He shares his knowledge and creativity by serving as a guest speaker for various industry associations. In particular, Jim is a frequent speaker on cost effective internal controls for the annual conference of the Michigan Association of Insurance Agents (MAIA). He has also spoken for the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants (MACPA) on several occasions, as well as Maner Costerisan client seminars.
Jim was inspired to go into accounting after taking an accounting class in high school. During college, he spent his nights working the midnight shift at a gas station which made him realize the value of hard work and how difficult it truly was to become a successful professional. Today, Jim attributes his success to his hard work, patience and creativity.
Born in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in Escanaba, Jim was raised in Perry where he currently resides with his wife, Shelly. Outside of the office, he enjoys spending time with his children. He can also be found playing golf, coaching basketball and gardening.
