James joined Maner Costerisan in 1987 and currently serves as a principal in the firm’s audit department. His primary focus is providing comprehensive audit and review services to nonprofit and affordable housing organizations. James has particular specialization in accounting and consulting work with nonprofit and privately-held businesses. He also has experience providing accounting and consulting services to privately-held businesses.
James has been in the accounting and consulting industry since 1986 when he worked as a staff auditor for one year at accounting firm Price Waterhouse, which is now known as PricewaterhouseCoopers. He received his first experience in the banking industry, working in the loan department for 7 years at Michigan National Bank.
With his extensive background and specialization in the nonprofit arena, James is regarded as an expert in his field and is well-respected by his peers. He often extends his knowledge to those throughout the accounting and nonprofit communities, serving as a speaker at nonprofit seminars for the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants (MACPA). James also presents on various nonprofit topics at the annual conference of the Michigan Society of Association Executives (MSAE).
James was inspired to pursue an accounting career by his close college friend, who also went into public accounting. His father, an insurance agent, also played a defining role in his financial background. James attributes his success to being a good listener and asking his clients questions, which allows him to obtain the necessary information to provide them with the best possible advice and solutions. He strives to continually learn, improve his skills and take on new challenges that come his way.
James was raised in St. Johns, Michigan where he resides today. He and his wife, Heather, have three children. In his spare time, James enjoys playing golf and tennis, biking and reading.
